TMG 8.0 upgrade process

TMG 8.0 has been released and many of us are busy downloading and installing. Here are the instructions for converting projects from previous versions of TMG for use in TMG 8. You must follow these instructions, and not just open an existing project or backup. The following is from the Wholly Genes Support forum. http://www.whollygenes.com/forums201/index.php?showtopic=14104

The Upgrade Process

The TMG v8 installation is independent of any prior TMG installation. (That is, you can continue to run TMG v7 after TMG v8 is installed). Installing and running TMG v8 will create new and independent program and data folders as needed. However, it is very important that you not try to access the data associated with one program from the other program as they are not compatible.

Users of TMG v7 should follow these steps carefully to move and upgrade a COPY of their TMG v7 data to the TMG v8 folder:

DO NOT USE A PRE-EXISTING BACKUP FILE.

Run TMG v7 and access File > Backup…

• On Step 1 of the Backup Wizard, choose “Backup Project” from the list and click on Next.

• On Step 2, modify if necessary the “Select backup file” field. It specifies the location and name of the backup file that will be created.. Make a careful note of that location and file name and then click on Next.

• On Step 3, make NO CHANGES to this screen. The backup will include only data and no configuration files that might conflict with TMG v8. Click on Next.

• On Step 4, make NO CHANGES to this screen and click on Next.

• On Step 5, click on Finish.

Run TMG v8 using the Sample project and access File > Restore

Navigate to and select the backup file name that you recorded in Step 2 above.

• On Step 1 of the Restore Wizard, choose “Restore Project” from the list and click on Next.

• On Step 2, verify that the restore paths refer to “The Master Genealogist v8”. Make NO CHANGES to this screen. Click on Next.

• On Step 3, make NO CHANGES to this screen and click on Next.

• On Step 4, make NO CHANGES to this screen and click on Next.

• On Step 5, click on Finish.

Thanks Kerry for posting these on the mailing list.

Import from RootsMagic

I’m no expert on alternative family tree programs but I thought RootsMagic was a reasonably popular one. Today I’ve tried to import a gedcom file sent to me by a client from RootsMagic into TMG, and I can’t.

TMG can’t handle UFT-8 gedcom files.

So I used Family Tree Maker instead.

I bought FTM 2005 Starter Edition for a few bucks to see what had changed since the version I used before I saw the light and bought TMG. It gave me 712 warnings for 8701 people, but that’s OK. I only want to look at it, not change it.

So now I have to learn to get around FTM all over again.
